The Coral
Today I will talk about the types of coral , which are many, but I will try to give you a general illustration of the most important ones:
It should be noted that all corals , where they are growing, are prohibited by the authorities, while where there is the possibility of collection and therefore there is authorization, there is the possibility to collect it.
First of all let's talk about the MEDITERRANEAN CORAL , which is the one most used by artisans, as it is collected throughout the Mediterranean basin, also commonly called corallium rubrum.
You can recognize it by the color that goes from orange to dark red, presenting a more or less uniform shade and is very suitable for the processing of necklaces, cabochons, drops and pendants
Then there is the CORALLO PELLE D'ANGELO , you must know that it is harvested in Japan, it has a pink color, but you must know that it also features u n white limestone core, which in coral processing, the less you see this white core and the higher the price.
How compact pink is, without spots, we can talk about rare piece
It is a rare coral, because it is almost impossible to find and is worked for cabochons, rings and earrings, rarely for necklaces, being rare it is rationalized to the maximum.
Then I present the SCIACCA CORAL the scientific name is Corallium rubrum, it has an orange color from light to dark, it is usually collected in the seas of Sciacca, it is a coral subfossil, as it can be dated to a few million years ago.
In fact, you should know that researchers, even today, cannot explain how an organic material such as coral can be subject to decomposition and has come to us after many years, in fact we think of a chemical process.
Suitable for making pins, buttons, spools, cannette.
Still today it is can find some rough, but difficult to find, as the oldest companies keep it as relics.
We have a less important coral which is BLACK CORAL , better defined as a subfamily of the Octocorals, ie those that are normally processed.
It is collected in the tropics, but can also be found in the seas of New Zealand.
It has a color ranging from brown to black, and is hard enough to work with. You must know that the value of black coral is very low, but often those who propose them speak of rarity, better be wary.
This object is worth very little both because this substance is very widespread and because the processes that are performed there are of very little technical value and nothing artistic
However, in my opinion, to exploit black coral it is indicated for necklaces, instead of onyx or black agate. It has a particular beauty value.
And finally I would like to tell you about the MISS CORAL which is white, pinkish white and pale pink,
The collection area from Japan to the Philippines is sometimes confused with Angel Skin, and is used to make nice pale pink pellets and cabochons.
Corals are however a rarity, in all types, and man has managed to enhance its value.
